Points on the didactics of mathematics

This paper appeared in the Proceedings from the 12th SEFI MWG Seminar in Vienna, 2004. Its primary focus is upon alternative ways of solving problems involving various kinds of proportionality, and the difficulties engineering students may experience when facing even relatively simple tasks involving the concept.
